Maple Class - Years 5 and 6

Welcome to the Maple Class page. Here you can find out about all the exciting things we are learning and doing in Years 5 and 6.

Our Learning

Our topics this year include:

Shang Dynasty

Sow, Grow, Farm: This term’s topic is "Sow, Grow, Farm". The children will learn about different types of farmland in the UK and worldwide, where our food comes from, and about air miles. They will also learn about why people grew food in WW2 and grow their own fruit and vegetables.

English

The children will be writing leaflets with bias, non-chronological reports, stories with a dilemma, diaries, formal letters, and learning performance poetry. Our class reader this term is "The Secret Garden," which we will use for reading comprehension and story writing activities. E.R.I.C. (Everyone Reading in Class) takes place on Thursday mornings. The children are expected to complete weekly Book Journal activities and read regularly at home.

The children are continuing with their White Rose units, with Year 6 also doing SATS revision and reasoning papers.

RE

Our RE topics are:

What does it mean for Muslims to follow God?  

What difference does the Resurrection make for Christians?

History

We will be learning about different farming styles through the ages, with a special focus on “Dig for Victory”.  

Art and Design

The children will be studying and producing artwork using the natural world.  

Design and Technology

Our project is Eat the Seasons, which will involve cookery.

PE

Our P.E. Days are Wednesday and Friday. On P.E. days, children need to come to School wearing their P.E. Kit. Please ensure that any earrings are removed and long hair is tied back. Thank you.
